The Hindu Temple in Canton celebrated the Grand installation of the Idols on Sunday, August 29th. The three event concluded on Sunday with Prana Prathista commencing at 4 am and concluding a little after 9 am. With the chanting of mantras by the priests the curtains were removed to the delight of devotees. The Hindu Temple spanning over 36,000 square feet is likely to be a "must see" temple destination for people in and out of Michigan. The administrators and volunteers did a fantastic job to make this an event to cherish for thousands of devotees and visitors.

In all its majesty, the new Hindu Temple of Canton reflects a cultural icon and an architectural landmark for a flourishing, 1,000-member group of devotees who humbly remember their fledgling days, nearly 25 years ago, when they gathered in their own homes. Their move this summer into their $8.3-million, 37,517-square-foot building on Cherry Hill Road, east of Canton Center, represents a milestone in a long, sometimes-difficult journey and the dawn of a promising, new beginning for Hindus across metro Detroit.

“We are very, very proud,” a smiling temple chairman, Manoj Sachdeva, said, on an August day when he and other temple officials provided a tour of the two-level building.

It's a place where Hindus and their visitors can worship, study, dance, practice yoga, celebrate weddings and organize community events such as free health fairs.

Rishi Jaitley launches Michigan Corps with Google Founder - WSJ article

To Rishi Jaitly, Michigan is America's state.

The New York native and former Google executive this week launched Michigan Corps, a national nonprofit intent on boosting Michigan's economy and creating wealth for its residents. Founding board members include Google's chief executive Eric Schmidt, CNN's chief medical correspondent Sanjay Gupta, author Jeffrey Eugenides and former Digg CEO Jay Adelson.

Rishi Jaitly
Mr. Jaitly and his wife, Anuja, who previously worked for social entrepreneurship charity Ashoka, left their jobs in March, moved to Detroit and used $10,000 from their savings to help jump-start the charity. They raised $250,000 from founding members and other donations in what they call their first round of seed financing to launch the fund.

"I grew up in Flushing and still root for the Knicks and the Mets but Michigan is a place that's disproportionately part of the American narrative," Mr. Jaitly says. "It's where the middle class was born, where the car industry, America's most well-known industry in the 20th century, was created."

He says Michigan's stark statistics calls for philanthropic attention: A 13.2% unemployment rate, almost four points above the national average, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Meanwhile, the illiteracy rate hovers around 18% in the state and 47% in Detroit, according to the Detroit Literacy Coalition.

"The decline of Detroit hasn't been a sexy, high-profile event," Mr. Jaitly says. "We needed to find a way to channel capital from New York to San Francisco and funnel it into Michigan's economic transformation."

Mr. Jaitly says he wanted to propose the question: "What can we do for Michigan?"

Michigan Corps looks to build a group of funders across the country called Corps Members to raise money and funnel grants to invest in local organizations that promote entrepreneurship, a better-trained work force, the retention and attraction of local companies, small-business financing, education and the strength of the housing market.

A Hindu advocacy group reached out today to metro Detroiters to explain its efforts and raise awareness about the world's third biggest religion.

The Hindu American Foundation, led by Southfield native Dr. Mihir Meghani, held its event today in Farmington Hills. About 100 Hindus, along with leaders in the Catholic, Episcopal, and Jewish communities, attended the talk and lunch.

The group is the first and only organization based in the Washington, D.C. area that represents about 2.5 million Hindu Americans. They work to highlight the human rights abuses that Hindus face in some foreign countries, correct misconceptions about Hinduism, and portray the religion to the public accurately.

Hindus have spent a lot of money to build temples across the U.S., but little for public policy work, Meghani said.

"We've been successful in our careers and the community, but we lack in the area of advocacy work," said Dr. Pramod Sanghi of Southgate, who attended the event.

"We have to create our own institutions to represent us," Padma Kuppa, of Troy, a member of the executive council of the foundation, said at the event.

Congratulations to Hansen Clarke, Rick Snyder and Virg Bernero!!!

Several Michigan Indian community members were actively involved in supporting these winner. It is very likely the Hansen Clarke will be elected to Congress in Novmeber. Our community will have a strong voice and that is great news. Shama and Mahendra Kenkre recently hosted a very successful fundraiser for Hansen.

Rick Snyder's campaign was supported by several Michigan Indians. Bhushan Kulkarni from Ann Arbor hosted a fundraiser for Rick last year and has been a strong supporter.

Virg Bernero also enjoys the support of our community members. Ram Ramanathan of Bloomfield Hills hosted a fundraiser and believes that Virg is a great individual.

Snyder and Bernero will face-off in November and one of them will be elected Governor.

Active participation in the election process by our community members is fantastic. miindia.com salutes these community leaders and others not mentioned above.
