Has anyone purchased factory refurbished PCs through buy.com. They have some really mean machines for under $500, but I am not sure what to expect with a refurb. I know that typical refurbs are due to shipping issues, could be either a case was cracked during shipping and it got replaced or a customer returned it because a drive was not working. just checking to see if someone had good or bad experience with refurbs

refurbished products are always examined closely. I would say go for it..if you don't like you can always return.

Do you really save much by buying refurb PC? I think the price changes too quick in the computer industry for refurb products to be priced much lower than the new items.

The price difference is pretty significant. I mean its around $300 more brand new for a similar product. Also the specs are just right where I want them to be. Only the refurb word is making me hesitant to pull the trigger.

For high price products, refurb is not that good. Most refurb will come with less warranty, mostly 90 days. Its ok to buy refurb for a $60 GPS or $100 Hard drive, but for $500, I would go for the new one. There is too much to lose if things go wrong after 3 months for these high end products. Also for camera, refurbs are never worth it, whatever price you pay. They are refurb for a reason.

I haven't bought a refurb computer, but I have bought other refurb items like MP3 players, cameras, camcorders, GPS, etc. I never had any problem with the refurbs that I bought.
All refurbs are not bad or faulty product. They are just products that have been opened and the company cannot sell it legally as new. A good chunk of refurbs are products that customers buy, opens it, finds that they don't like it and they return it back to store. The store/manufacturer cannot sell this product as new, so they put the product through their testing process once again and re-markets it as refurbs.
If you are decently savvy with computer / hardware / software then I would say go for the refurb. At least you would know what to do if something needs to be fixed later.

As I expected, the reponses are evenly split between buy and not to buy !! However thanks for your thoughts. To be more specific, I am getting a quad-core desktop with 6gb ram, 640gb hdd, hdmi port, spdif ports etc for $379. A similar one new is around $650. Whadya think? Should i try my luck with black friday to see if I can get something close for that price but brand new??
