As COVID-19 pandemic started to ravage Michigan and its residents during the Spring of 2020, Swaroop Bhojani of HutKay restaurant in Ann Arbor launched the Free Meal program. With support from volunteers and donors the program continued on and has delivered 9,200 free meals as of May 19, 2021.

Anybody could walk into the restaurant and pick up a free lunch box.  No questions asked. Healthy vegan meals were prepared with highest quality ingredients. The team also delivered free lunch boxes to Delonis Shelter Home at SAWC (Shelter Association of Washtenaw County), Food Gatherers’ Community Kitchen and Safe House for Domestic abuse victims in Ann Arbor.

Many of the residents were unemployed and  homeless. Several senior citizens were also served.  On occasions regular visitors would leave contributions while picking up their food.
