A serious effort is currently underway to evaluate the launch of a direct non-stop flight from Detroit to India. For the past 20 years, the Indian community has been growing fast and is recognized as the fastest growing ethnic segment in Michigan. Michigan is home to over a 120,000 residents with strong ties to India. Detroit airport is one of the best in the country and serves as a hub for Delta Airlines. While there are a couple of one-stop flights to India, with a stop-over in Europe, there are no non-stop flights. For the last few years, a significant number of our community members fly out of Chicago due to more options and better connectivity. Most travelers drive for 5 hours from Detroit to Chicago and another 5-hour drive on the return trip. Many also connect through other US cities like Boston, Newark, New York, Philadelphia, Washington D.C. etc.
Business growth in automotive and information technology sectors in Michigan is fueled by increased partnerships with Indian companies and resources. Every year over 3,000 new highly qualified individuals of Indian descent move into the area. Thousands of foreign students from India register at Wayne State, UM, MSU, Lawrence Tech, Oakland University, University of Toledo and other colleges annually.
A team of our community members has facilitated preliminary discussions with Delta Airlines and airport executives from Detroit and Hyderabad. Cooperation from Michigan and Telangana Government will be sought to make this proposal a reality.
The Ohio Indian community is also working together to make this flight a reality.
Should this flight become a reality, there is no doubt that it will have a positive economic impact on both Detroit and Hyderabad regions. Hyderabad boasts excellent connectivity to other cities in India while Detroit airport is convenient for residents in Western Ohio and Windsor, Canada also.
As a part of the due diligence work, it is critical to secure preliminary data from the travelling public.
