Diwali 2021 celebrations have already started in Michigan bringing cheer and joy to all residents celebrating this Indian festival. The annual “Festival of Lights” symbolizes the spiritual "victory of light over darkness, good over evil, and knowledge over ignorance" and is celebrated by over a billion people by members of Hindu, Sikh and Jain faiths around the world. This year, the festival date is Thursday, November 4th.

Diwali is also a time to shop for jewelry and fashion in addition to food and fireworks. Grocery store sales have increased significantly despite supply chain disruptions. Indian Fashion boutiques and Jewelry stores have announced specials sales as well. While the COVID-19 pandemic continues to curtail gatherings, things are much better this year compared to 2020.

Governor Gretchen Whitmer has enthusiastically delivered a video message with Diwali greetings. For the first time ever, Canton Township sponsored an outdoor Diwali celebration on October 22nd. The event was a huge success. Also a video greeting from Township Supervisor Anne Marie Graham-Hudak.  Troy Mayor Ethan Baker has issued a Diwali proclamation too. Click image below.
