July 2022

Guru Purnima celebrations are currently underway at various temples in Michigan.  The annual festival is celebrated on Full Moon day (typically in the month of July).  Guru Purnima celebrations center around the expression of reverence and gratitude to teachers and mentors. In many cases a father or mother also fulfills this vital role. This day is dedicated to those Gurus, mentors and teachers who continue to enrich our lives.  It is appropriate to express our gratitude to all such forces during this time.

The word Guru is a combination of two Sanskrit words - ‘Gur’ meaning darkness and ‘Ru’ that is opposite of darkness (light).  The word Guru refers to someone who extricates followers from the darkness of ignorance and enlightens them with knowledge and awareness. It has relevance in spiritual as well as day-to-day life.

Guru Purnima is celebrated by Hindus, Buddhists, Jains and Sikhs. Sikhs observe this day to honor their Ten Spiritual Gurus. Jains mark it as a “Treenok Guru Purnima”.

Millions worship the “divine” as their Guru and celebrate at temples throughout the world.  While the actual date this year July 13th (Wednesday) festivities commenced more than a week ago.
