Happy New Year 2022 and reflecting on 2021

The year 2021 started out as a year of hope, for the world, as the vaccine news broke out.  While there were several positive improvements, there is no denying the fact that 2021 has been a roller coaster year on many fronts.

Reflecting on 2021…

A cautious start …
The year kicked off with little or no social activities. As vaccines got approved to fight the COVID virus many of the restrictions started easing.  People started shopping in person, traveling and dining in restaurants.  Many of our community members started traveling to India as COVID restrictions eased up in India.

Second wave in India
The second COVID wave in India started in April 2021 and caused havoc to hundreds of thousands of families.  Consequently, the Indian medical infrastructure collapsed and patients died due to lack of hospital beds.  Michigan Indian community members rose up to the occasion by shipping oxygen concentrators, ventilators and other medical supplies. Many in our community worked nights and weekends handle phone calls from desperate friends, relatives and strangers in India.  Thousands of lives were saved by our efforts. Sadly, many of us lost family members, friends and coworkers during this time. Some Michigan residents got infected while visiting India and sadly lost their lives after returning.

Social events and activities
Although subdued, many of the annual community events like Rath Yatra, India Day and Diwali celebrations were held.  Our community came together to organize several vaccine drives.  It is estimated that 95% of our community members are fully vaccinated. Congratulations to all the community and religious organizations on taking the lead. Initiatives like direct flights from Detroit to India and driver’s license relief for foreign citizens were launched during the year. Let us hope for successful outcomes in 2022.

Notably our community has come together to actively participate in the political arena in Michigan. In addition to supporting Indian American elected officials, our community members organized fundraisers with substantial contributions. The 2020 census report shows that we are the fastest growing ethnic community in Michigan. We can determine results in some key electoral races in the State. We are more united than ever! We need to continue to momentum. is committed to supporting such critical and needed efforts. We believe that political engagement is required to ensure representation in matters relating to immigration, civil rights, fair share of opportunities etc.

In 2021, recognized talented youth in our community.  We sure have some of the most incredible talent in our community.  In 2021, many of our community members achieved success and leadership roles in various organizations.  We are proud of these individuals and have recognized them under our blog section.

Loss of lives
Unfortunately, we lost several beloved community leaders in 2021. We also lost a few young professionals due to cardiac related illnesses.  Our obituary section includes the write-ups. Our thoughts are with the friends and families of these departed souls.

Hope for 2022
Let us hope for complete relief from COVID in 2022.  Let us stay united and strengthen the community. is committed to serving the Michigan Indian Community.
