Indian Fashion Week USA During the Pandemic Brings Hope and Community Together
While the world was at halt, DIWA (Detroit Indian Women’s Association) a nonprofit launched India Fashion Week USA virtually in October 2020 at the height of COVID-19 to support small business entrepreneurs in the Indian fashion industry and bring the community together. The Fashion show interconnected many facets of the industry - starting from street style photographers to jewelry designers. This platform brought out the entrepreneurial aspect of beauty and fashion, empowering women to be financially independent. To add to that, Indian Fashion Week brought awareness of sustainable fashion and jewelry to help fund DIWA's Cancer Initiatives.
Savita Monroe, President and Alka Srivastava, Vice President of DIWA joined hands with Mira Bedi, owner of Chrysalis Couture who brought several designers and creatives to the runway platform along with Rupali Bedi from Utsav Planner, and videography support by KO Photography. The show went live and was a big hit. The much affected fashion industry needed this lift and hope.
After several challenges, the passion for Fashion and Beauty continued again for another Fashion show in Spring 2020. Again, faced with the same challenges, but bringing in other creative industries into limelight, jewelry designers and normally in the backstage, Mehndi, Facial artists were also invited to participate. There was a bigger community support with Marigold Event Planner helping by opening their warehouse for meet and greet and Meridian Banquet Hall opened their door for the show and Utsav Planners set the perfect stage for another virtual show. Thanks to Bidisha Sinha for bringing beauty sponsor Estée Lauder, a global brand that promoted the same core values as DIWA. Ashray Dravidian and his team from miles of photography captured the runway beautifully. Blessed by Michigan State Official leaders. Two days or recording and hard work led to the show being a huge success and covered by Fox2 News channel.
From the success of the two virtual shows, the Detroit Indian Women's Association is hosting first time live India Fashion Week USA on October 23rd at the beautiful Westin Southfield.
