Michigan Indian community felicitates Dr. Virinder Moudgil

On December 9th, 2021 several Michigan Indian community members got together to celebrate the contributions made by Dr. Virinder Moudgil, President Lawrence Technological University. As Dr. Moudgil is planning on retiring at the end of 2021, the community gathered to acknowledge his trail blazing career and service. 

The felicitation event was organized by www.miindia.com in collaboration with Mr. Madhava Reddy (CEO, HTC Global Services), Dr. Anil Kumar (Physician and member Board of Governors – Wayne State University), Dr. Ashok Jain (Senior VP and Board member – Beaumont Health) and Dr. Ganesh Reddy (Entrepreneur). The interactive event, held at HTC Global Headquarters in Troy, was filled with nostalgic recollections of Dr. Moudgil, his student life in India, his experience at Banaras Hindu University, and his learnings and experience of being a faculty and administrator in the United States. Several prominent community members shared their memories with the attendees. A beautiful crystal plaque was presented to Dr. Virinder Moudgil for his impactful journey and mentorship to thousands of students and faculty members in the community.

Dr. Virinder K. Moudgil started as an assistant professor at Oakland University in 1976. He was appointed provost and vice-president for academic affairs in 2001 and became senior vice-president for academic affairs in 2008, a title he held until his departure in 2012 to serve as president of Lawrence Technological University. Moudgil holds a Ph.D. in zoology-biochemistry from Banaras Hindu University, India, and is a graduate of the Harvard Institute for Educational Management. While at OU Moudgil taught classes in biochemistry, endocrinology and the biology of aging. He built a large research program studying progesterone and breast cancer, which involved many graduate and undergraduate research assistants. During his 11 years as provost Moudgil significantly expanded Oakland's academic offerings and helped found the Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine.

As President of LTU, Dr. Moudgil was responsible for the significant growth of LTU’s enrollment, fundraising, and community outreach. Campus facility growth and improvements include the purchase of an adjacent five acres and 92,000 sq. ft. twin buildings, construction of a third and fourth student residence hall, LTU’s Detroit Center for Design and Technology in midtown Detroit, and the Taubman Complex and Marburger STEM Center opened in September 2016, which is also home to advanced engineering, life sciences, and architecture programs. Dr. Moudgil also has led or championed research and scholarship traditions at LTU emphasizing undergraduate basic and applied research. During his tenure at Oakland University, hosting 5 sitting US Presidents and the former President of India Dr. Abdul Kalam are historic.

The simple, yet fun evening was emceed by Anu Gopalakrishnan with participation from business and community leaders along with representatives of multiple organizations.
